May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to breaking the stigma and opening conversations around emotional well-being. Whether you’re navigating a busy career, family responsibilities, or simply the everyday ups and downs of life, it’s important to slow down and check in with yourself. This month is the perfect reminder to pause, breathe, and give your mental health the care it deserves.

Here are some of our favorite tips for staying grounded and prioritizing self-care this month and beyond.

Start With a Daily Check-In

The fact of the matter is, managing your mental health is a daily responsibility we all must undertake. However! You don’t need a full journal entry or a daily therapy session to stay in tune with yourself. A simple mental or written check-in can help you set aside time to be intentional about staying aware of how you're feeling and why.

Try this:

  • Ask yourself: How am I feeling today? Emotionally, physically, mentally?
  • Give yourself a rating from 1 to 10 for stress, energy, and mood.
  • Jot down one thing you're grateful for and one thing you need.

These little moments of mindfulness can bring your needs to light and help guide your choices for the day ahead.

Talk to Yourself Like You’d Talk to a Friend

Self-talk, self-talk, self-talk. There’s no underestimating how powerful an impact self-talk can have on mental well-being. Often, we’re harder on ourselves than we would ever be to someone we care about.

When your inner critic shows up, try to:

  • Reframe negative thoughts. Instead of “I can’t handle this,” say, “This is hard, but I’m doing my best.”
  • Celebrate small wins.
  • Give yourself permission to rest, make mistakes, and ask for help.
  • If you wouldn’t use those specific words, tone, or message when speaking to your best friend who’s hurting, don’t use them on yourself!

Kindness toward yourself isn’t self-indulgent; It’s essential.

Make Time for Small Acts of Self-Care

Self-care doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive. It’s about intentionally choosing moments that replenish your energy and soothe your spirit.

A few simple ideas:

  • Step outside for fresh air and sunshine. Pro tip: Getting sunshine in the morning (We’re talking right after you wake up) can help regulate your circadian rhythm and boost your serotonin levels.
  • Take a 5-minute break to stretch or meditate - At least once an hour if possible!
  • Swap doom-scrolling for a book or playlist that brings you peace.
  • Learn to recognize when your plate is full and it’s time to say no - This can come with a learning curve, but overall, a great payoff.

The more consistently you nurture yourself, the more resilient you'll feel in the face of stress.

Create Healthy Boundaries with Technology

Our devices are tools, but they can also be stress triggers. Whether it's constant notifications or social media comparisons, digital overload can take a toll on your mental health.

Protect your peace by:

  • Using “Do Not Disturb” during certain hours.
  • Decluttering your social feed! Follow accounts that inspire, not drain.
  • Scheduling screen-free time each day, especially before bed.

Disconnecting, even briefly, can help you reconnect with yourself.

Know When to Seek Support

Self-care is vital, but it doesn’t replace the need for professional support when you’re struggling. Reaching out is a sign of strength, not weakness.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, consider:

  • Talking to a licensed therapist or counselor.
  • Exploring virtual mental health platforms or hotlines.
  • Opening up to someone you trust—a friend, family member, or mentor.

You don’t have to go it alone. Help is always available.

Prioritize Yourself - You Deserve It

Mental Health Awareness Month is a reminder to care for the one person you’re with every day: you. Checking in, setting boundaries, showing self-compassion, and asking for help aren’t luxuries; they’re lifelines. Let this month be your starting point for sustainable, life-long self-care.
